New Souvenir Tourist Guide For Obama Visit Launched

A newly commissioned free souvenir tourist information guide will hit the streets of Moneygall today (Tuesday 17th May 2011) as part of the campaign to put Moneygall firmly on the international tourist map. The publication has been produced by Shannon Development, the Tourism Authority and Regional Development Agency for the Shannon Region in association with Offaly County Council.

The new tourist guide, designed in pocket size, is available for download at www.shannondevelopment.ie and www.facebook.com/irelandshannonregion
and limited supplies of the printed version will be available in Moneygall and at Tourist Information Offices in the surrounding regions. The new guide and other tourism promotional material, has been provided for inclusion in international media packs, and will be used in a tourism promotional campaign at home and overseas. Shannon Development is working with Tourism Ireland who plan to use it for a promotional drive in the US market. This publication sets out to provide visitors with a compact guide to the area and assist them in tracing the President’s Moneygall heritage.

“The visit of President and Mrs. Obama to Ireland will have a multi-million Euro spin-off for the Irish economy, in terms of tourism and industry. Many organisations throughout the country are working to maximise the potential of the visit. Here in the Shannon Region, Shannon Development, Ireland’s only regional economic development company, is actively working to promote the area, linking on a daily basis with the relevant Government agencies and Departments, including Fáilte Ireland. This will be the third successive US Presidential visit to the Shannon Region since 1998 and we have been delighted to assist in all of these visits. Each visit generated positive spin-off for the areas included on the itinerary, and we anticipate the same level of interest in Moneygall from President Obama’s visit. We are already experiencing a huge level of media interest and have put a dedicated Tourist Information service on the ground in Moneygall for the duration of the event,” says Dr. Vincent Cunnane, Chief Executive, Shannon Development.

Shannon Development is also working with Offaly County Council and the local community to ensure that the visit of President Obama to Moneygall is memorable and maximises the tourism potential for Moneygall and Shinrone.

Commenting on the visit, which has yet to be officially confirmed, Pat Gallagher, Manager, Offaly County Council said: “We are working with a range of partners to ensure that everything runs smoothly for the visit. Personally speaking it gives me great pleasure to acknowledge the direct family association that President Barack Obama has with County Offaly, in particular with Moneygall and Shinrone. The Kearney story is an interesting one with many links in the family tree to different professions, and we are delighted to be contributing to the job of getting international recognition for the area.”

From today Shannon Development will have a Tourist Information Office on main street Moneygall for the duration of the visit. In addition a range of tourist information designed to assist visitors to ‘Obama Country’, as the Moneygall and Shinrone areas of Offaly are now being branded, is available online from www.shannondevelopment.ie and www.shortbreaksireland.ie  This will include a discount card which can be downloaded to provide visitors to the Region with a 25% discount on a range of top visitor attractions and activities in the area.
