Pig N’ Porter Festival Generates €500,000 in Visitor Spend for Limerick

Last weekend’s Pig n’ Porter festival in Limerick generated a visitor spend over €500,000 for Limerick which has been awarded European City of Sport status for 2011.

Commenting on the success of the event John Crowe, Shannon Development Projects & Promotions Manger, Limerick Development Division said: “Having spoken to the organisers and representatives of the tourism and hospitality trade, it is quite clear that the event represents a major economic boost for the city. We have just completed the number crunching on the Festival and are delighted to report that the event has yielded visitor spend in excess of €500,000 for Limerick.

We have also received very positive feedback from the accommodation and hospitality sectors around the success of the event. Many of them reporting a significant increase in their business over the weekend, in some cases a doubling. Over 2,000 participants played in the games with an additional 3,000 coming out to support the event. Over 70% of the teams were from outside Limerick. We look forward to continuing to work with the promoter of the Festival to grow it even more for next year.”

Speaking about the event Padraic O’Connor, PRO of the Pig n’ Porter organising committee said; “Trying to change the Festival from a one day to a three day event has proved hugely success for us. We are delighted with the positive feedback from the participants, spectators and the city’s hospitality and accommodation sector. We look forward to working with Shannon Development to make next year’s event, which is our tenth anniversary, a really special event for Limerick during its tenure as a European City of Sport.”

“The Pig n’ Porter Festival reinforces the strength of one of Limerick’s predominant tourism brands, namely sports tourism.  This event and other sporting events such as the Aussie Rules Game scheduled for Limerick in October, show just why Limerick has been awarded European City of Sports status for next year,” says John Crowe in conclusion.
