Details of 2010 Limerick’s Pig ‘N’ Porter Tag Rugby Festival announced

A host of new events have been announced for Limerick’s 2010 Pig n’ Porter Festival, the world’s largest tag rugby competition which attracts thousands of visitors to the Mid-West every July.

Old Crescent RFC in association with the Irish Tag Rugby Association (ITRA) will host the 9th annual Pig ‘n’ Porter Tag Rugby Festival at their grounds in Rosbrien, Limerick between Friday, July 16th and Sunday, July 18th 2010.

More than 120 teams from across Ireland and the UK will bid to be crowned Pig ‘n’ Porter tag rugby champions and will join thousands of others to enjoy the festivities around the event especially the popular Pig ‘n Porter BBQ night.

This year’s three day event which is sponsored by Heinz Tomato Ketchup will feature for the first time a hockey blitz, an underage tag rugby expo and the inaugural Pig on a Spit cooking competition which is set to become a huge attraction.

Speaking at the launch of Pig n’ Porter 2010, which is also supported by Shannon Development, at Old Crescent RFC today (Monday), organiser, Padraic O’Connor said; “We’re very proud that the Pig n’ Porter has been growing steadily over the last nine years to become the largest such event in the world. We’re delighted to add extra events like the Pig on a Spit competition and open the competition to hockey and extend the tag rugby programme. We expect this year’s festival once again to be a sell-out and we would like to thank Heinz Tomato Ketchup for coming on board as our title sponsor. Without the support of Heinz we would not be in a position to expand and develop the Pig ‘n’ Porter Festival. We are also extremely grateful to Shannon Development and also to the Limerick Co-Ordination Office for their support.”

Eoghan Prendergast, Limerick Development Division Manager with Shannon Development said: “We are delighted to support the Pig & Porter Festival organised by Old Crescent RFC. The development of sports tourism is an integral part of Shannon Development’s tourism strategy and events such as the Pig’n’Porter Festival enable us to showcase the proud sporting tradition of Limerick to a wide audience.”

Maresa Cagney, Marketing Manager at HJ Heinz Ireland said: “Heinz Tomato Ketchup is delighted to support the 2010 Pig ‘n' Porter Festival. The event has grown steadily throughout its nine years to emerge this year as a weekend-long event that all the family can enjoy.  The Pig ‘n' Porter is the leading festival of its kind in the world so it is only fitting that it is supported by another world leader, Heinz Tomato Ketchup.”

The 2010 event commences with a welcome party at The Piggery in the grounds of Old Crescent RFC on Friday night, July 16th. There will be special guests attending the event helping to build the spirit of rugby in Limerick, renowned as the rugby capital of Ireland.

On Saturday, July 17th, the main event, the Pig ‘n’ Porter Tag Rugby Festival gets underway contested by 120 teams from the UK/Ireland. Throughout the day, the iconic pig will be roasting on a spit ahead of the legendary Pig ‘n’ Porter BBQ.

When the prizes have been handed out and the weary bodies have had a chance to recover, the festival continues into the early hours with live ballad sessions, a live band, a bouncy castle and a disco.
On Sunday, July 18th, the inaugural Pig on a Spit competition takes place as well as the underage tag rugby blitz and plenty of live music.

Tickets for the event priced at €10 are available from the organising committee or from www.pignporter.com
