Angling Cots, Gandelows, Currachs and Sand Cots took to the waters for the revival of the Great Limerick River Regatta yesterday (Monday 3rd May 2010). The event was sponsored by Shannon Development who got involved to help breath new life into the River Regatta tradition. The event was last held in the early 1980’s and generated considerable excitement around the city.
Speaking about the importance of the Regatta, Eoghan Prendergast, Shannon Development Limerick Development Division Manger said, “Shannon Development is delighted to have supported this wonderful event, and we are particularly pleased that our sponsorship will go towards funds for a boat building project to help young local people learn to build more of the traditional boats associated with the Regatta, thereby reviving one of the oldest river based traditions in Limerick.”
The 2010 Limerick River Regatta was launched by the Mayor of Limerick Cllr Kevin Kiely and took place between Thomond and Sarsfield bridges and the overall race winners were; Aisling Grimes, Robert Kenny, and Mike Grimes, whose boat of choice was a Currach. Robert and Mike Grimes were also members of a five man crew that won the Great London River Race in 2009, in a currach. They came first of 360 participants, in a race that took place over 22 miles from Richmond to Greenwich on the Thames. Due to the success of yesterday’s Regatta the event organisers hope to hold further Regattas in the near future.
