Tourism bosses to use St Patrick to entice tourists to Limerick

Shannon Development, the tourism authority for the Shannon Region, is undertaking a major national and international tourism marketing promotion around the forthcoming St. Patrick’s Festival in Limerick which includes for the Skyfest extravaganza.

Speaking about their plans Dr. Vincent Cunnane, Chief Executive, Shannon Development said, “Shannon Development is very proud to support Limerick’s St. Patrick’s Festival. It’s not only a wonderful opportunity for the people of Limerick to enjoy themselves, but it also provides us with a unique platform to showcase the best of Limerick to a national and international audience.”

“I can’t tell you how delighted we were to have secured the Skyfest event for Limerick in association with Limerick City Council. A huge amount of work goes into ensuring that everything runs smoothly on the day, and we are working very closely with the St. Patrick’s Day Festival Company and City Council to make sure that positive memories of this event live on long after it is over.”

The National Lottery Skyfest is part of the National St. Patrick’s Festival celebrations. This is the third year the event has been staged outside of Dublin and Limerick has been chosen this year to host this exciting event as part of the National St. Patrick’s Festival celebrations.

“Limerick’s St. Patrick’s Festival is a wonderful vehicle to put Limerick centre stage as a fun loving place to be.  We are delighted to be working with TV and radio crews from Ireland, the US, China and the UK, who will be broadcasting from the City during the Festival. We will be working with them to ensure they beam wonderful images of our city to their viewers,” said Dr. Cunnane.

“We were pleased to provide King John’s as a launching platform for the fireworks and this iconic visitor attraction will feature in TV coverage and help brand Limerick internationally. It is not just the immediate value of this event for the City, but equally critical is the future promotional opportunities the event creates for us.”

“As the tourism authority for the Shannon Region, Shannon Development is working to maximise these opportunities. For instance, we worked with Irish Rail to put on special deals for visitors to come to Limerick for the St. Patrick’s Festival weekend and Skyfest.  We have been working with local hoteliers to put special holiday packages together to entice people to come to Limerick for the festivities.”

“The Skyfest event alone is expected to attract upwards of 60,000 visitors. So to create maximum buzz around Limerick we have put together a two hour programme of pre Skyfest entertainment to dress the City and draw people into its heart to really experience the fun and creative side of Limerick.  We have also worked closely with hotels and pubs in the region to develop special pre and post event entertainment,” he concluded.

The festivities kick off on Saturday March 13th when the National Lottery Skyfest will light up the skies over Limerick with King John’s Castle providing a stunning backdrop to this year’s breathtaking fireworks display. Pre-show activities provided by Shannon Development kick off from 6pm and include live bands, fire jugglers, painters and much more!
