Shannon Development calls for the recommendations of the Limerick Local Government Committee to be acted on quickly

Shannon Development is calling for the implementation of the recommendations of the Report launched today (Thursday 2nd September 2010) by the Limerick Local Government Committee on “Renewing Local Government in Limerick.”

Welcoming the report’s recommendations Dr. Vincent Cunnane, Chief Executive, Shannon Development said;
“It is critical that the recommendations of this report be acted on as quickly as possible. Shannon Development’s main recommendation to the Limerick Local Government Committee was that the Limerick City boundary needs to be extended to ensure a larger and stronger Limerick City with the necessary scale and resource base to drive the economic development of the Limerick / Shannon Gateway. We also recommended that there should be one governing organisation with responsibility for Limerick City and County as the optimal structure to manage a Greater Limerick Area with a stronger city at its core. These views have been endorsed by the Committee.

We are pleased to note that the Limerick Local Government Committee has made these two of its key recommendations, and we view their implementation as a key factor in regenerating Limerick as the region’s driver of economic growth. In our submission to, and meeting with, the Limerick Local Government Committee, we emphasised that the long term economic development of the Limerick / Shannon Gateway, driven by a strong Limerick City, is vital to the Shannon Region’s future.”

Highlighting how implementing the Report findings would positively impact the long term development of the area, Dr. Cunnane said, “Shannon Development strongly believes that the long term economic development prospects of the Shannon Region are best served by having Limerick City as a strong, vibrant metropolitan core fulfilling its potential as the economic driving force of the Region over the next twenty to thirty years. We view the recommendations in this report as an important step in achieving that.”
