Ireland to lead Major EU Energy Saving Initiative

The EU estimates that €100 billion is wasted every year because of energy inefficiencies, but this may become a thing of the past as Ireland is to lead a major new green energy initiative to help industries across Europe become more energy efficient.

Led by Shannon Development, the steering group comprises representatives from eight countries, Ireland, UK, Finland, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Estonia and Bulgaria. The Group will come up with a new policy tool which will be rolled out across Europe to integrate energy policy with regional policy.

“We are delighted to be working with our EU partners on a project that will have long term economic benefits across Europe. Here in Ireland we will be working closely with the Limerick Clare Energy Agency to develop and shape our research work and to encourage a range of industries to embrace energy saving measures,” says Dr. Brian Callanan, Shannon Development.

The project is called “Regional Clusters for Energy Planning,” and is supported by the EU Intelligent Energy Programme. It will support the assessment of potential energy efficiencies, analysis of prospects for renewable energy, action plans and development of pilot projects in each regional cluster in the eight countries.

Work on the project is expected to be complete by the end of 2011 and has the potential to revolutionize the way industries all over Europe save energy. At the end of the programme a trans-national blueprint will be produced to show regional business clusters throughout Europe how they can make energy savings and introduce energy efficiencies by working together. Another expected result of the project will see an initial 700 enterprises across Europe being empowered to integrate intelligent energy into their business practices.
