Pirates Invade Lough Derg

Beat the recession blues with a free River Shannon Cruise

A band of pirates has invaded Lough Derg, Ireland’s largest pleasure lake on the River Shannon. The group who are normally found on the Caribbean high seas, made their way to the lake after hearing about a unique opportunity being offered by Shannon Development, the Shannon Region Tourism Authority, the Lough Derg Marketing Group and four cruise line companies, Emerald Star, Carrick Craft, Shannon Castle Line, and Silverline Cruisers, to beat the recession blues with a free River Shannon Cruise.

The Buccaneers led by Captain Sean Sparrow, a cousin of the famous Jack Sparrow, took over a couple of cruisers for a day of mayhem and mischief.  Visitors to the Lake can enjoy their own adventure on Lough Derg and the River Shannon on the 9th and 10th May next in a unique opportunity to experience a free ‘taster’ cruise.

“We wanted to give people who are thinking of holidaying at home this year an opportunity to sample a family holiday experience with a difference. Cruising has something for everyone, whether your dream is to captain of your own cruiser, or just laze on deck watching the world go by. It is a wonderful way to explore one of Ireland’s most famous waterways. Adventure is guaranteed with many colourful towns and villages dotted around the lake just waiting to be explored,” says John Crowe, Shannon Development.

A treasure chest of wonderful memories is promised, as you learn to master the waterways and explore the River Shannon. The adventure will cast off on both days at 10.30am and will drop anchor at 4.00pm. To secure a 30 minute cruise advance booking is required. Trips can be taken from three locations around Lough Derg, Banagher, Co. Offaly, Mountshannon, Co. Clare and Portumna, Co. Galway.

Carrick Craft (Tel: 057-9151187) and Silverline Cruisers (Tel: 057-9151112) are offering cruises from their bases at Banagher, Emerald Star (Tel: 071-9627646) will run free cruises from their base in Portumna Co. Galway, and Shannon Castle Line (Tel: 061-927042) will operate their cruise from the Marina at Mountshannon Harbour. Further information on the adventure is available from www.shortbreaksireland.ie/cruising and bookings can be made directly with cruise line companies. Everyone who books a trip will also be entered into a free draw for a weekend cruise on Lough Derg.
