Dr Vincent Cunnane, Chief Executive, Shannon Development, described the announcement today (Thursday, 8 January 2009) of 1,900 job losses at the DELL plant, in Shannon Development’s Raheen Business Park in Limerick, as a severe blow for the employees and their families. He said “Our immediate thoughts are for the employees affected and their families, and for employees in local firms that are dependent on Dell”.
Dr Cunnane continued “Dell has been a major source of employment in Limerick and the wider region, and these job losses will have a severe impact on the economy of this region. Given the impact of these job losses and the importance of Dell to the regional economy, Shannon Development, as the regional development agency, will work with Dell and with IDA and other relevant agencies and bodies, to assist in every way we can in developing alternative options for Dell and for these highly productive workers”.
Dr Cunnane added “The critical importance of Limerick City and its environs as the economic hub and gateway for this region is a key element of our regional development strategy. Immediately, and over the medium term, we will be doing everything we can to enable Limerick and the regional economy recover from this severe blow”.
