Ryanair & Shannon Development Tourism Campaign Yields Dividends

A joint tourism campaign, by Ryanair and Shannon Development, which focused on promoting Shannon in the UK and Germany attracted over 160,000 visitors to the region and resulted in 240,000 ‘bednights’ and over €19 million in tourism spend for the Shannon region this year.

The joint press and web marketing campaign included a unique 24 hours ‘Shannon Only’ seat sale for UK passengers on www.ryanair.com which provided 50,000 Shannon only seats for just £5 – including taxes and charges.

The campaign also included over 120 newspaper adverts in the UK and Germany and a number of ‘Fly Shannon’ promotional mailings to over 1.4million Ryanair email subscribers.  The total campaign placed Shannon Region Tourism in front of over 32 million potential holidaymakers in the UK and over 3 million in Germany.

Commenting of the results Stephen McNamara, Ryanair’s Head of Communications said, “The entire Shannon region has benefited greatly from the tourism revenues brought through Shannon Airport as a result of this Ryanair and Shannon Development campaign. Joint tourism campaigns are vital in growing inbound traffic and tourism to Shannon and the Mid-West region. We are delighted with our Shannon Development partnership as the results really speak for themselves.”

According to John King, Director of Tourism at Shannon Development, “We are delighted with the results of this campaign which in a challenging tourism climate has brought a range of benefits to the tourism industry and service sector, and look forward to a continued successful partnership with Ryanair in 2009.”
