Shannon Development Chief Commends Tidy Town Success

Shannon Development Chief Executive, Vincent Cunnane, warmly welcomed the announcement (Monday 9th September ‘08) that the Shannon Region has won a range of awards in this year’s National Tidy Towns Competition including four National Awards. Birdhill, Co. Tipperary was crowned Ireland's Tidiest Village, and Ennis, Co. Clare won the award Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre and also the National ‘Le Gaeilge’ Award. Lissycasey, Co. Clare also won a national title for Best New Entry in their category. The Region also secured three gold medals awarded to Birdhill, Co. Tipperary, and Ennis and Kilrush, Co. Clare. Ennis won a total of seven awards in this year’s competition.

“Shannon Development is proud of its long association with the National Tidy Towns Competition and would like to pay particular tribute to all those sterling communities in every corner of the Region who took part and as a result, made a tremendous contribution to protecting and enhancing our environment. We look forward to congratulating all the Shannon Region Award winners at this year’s annual Shannon Region Tidy Towns Award ceremony which we will be organising for late October. At this special celebration John Gormley TD, Minister for the Environment Heritage and Local Government will present awards to all Shannon Region winners,” said Vincent Cunnane, Chief Executive, Shannon Development.

“In this the 50th anniversary of the Competition, it is a wonderful achievement for the Shannon Region to win two out of five top national awards for a second time. This achievement is made even more significant when you know that over 700 communities nationwide were vying for these awards. Among this year’s awards are three gold medals, two silver medal and three bronze medals, a fantastic accomplishment for all involved,” said Mr. Cunnane.
