John Brassil, Chairman, Shannon Development, has announced the appointment of R & L Walsh Construction Ltd from Castleisland, Co. Kerry, to undertake the construction of Shannon Development’s new €3 million E-Town project in Tarbert, Co. Kerry. This new development will see the construction of 8 live/work homes tailored to suit business people who would like to work from home.
Making the announcement John Brassil, Chairman, Shannon Development said, “We are delighted to be undertaking our second E-Town project in Tarbert. Once complete this exciting tailor designed facility will meet the needs of communities by creating new clusters of businesses offering employment and rejuvenating community life, and it will meet the needs of the business community by providing a stress free work and living environment to help them achieve a perfect live/work balance. An environment where enterprises in the traded services sector can flourish, not just at local or national level but on a global scale.”
The E-Towns concept, the first of its kind in Ireland, was originally created by Shannon Development as a means of stimulating economic growth in smaller rural communities and addressing the need for a better live/work balance for business people. The Company recently completed the construction of Ireland’s first E-Town in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, which comprises 12 live/work premises at a cost of €4 million. This combined with the Tarbert investment brings their total investment in E-Towns to €7 million.
“In coming up with the E-Towns concept Shannon Development has created a new 21st century model for enhancing enterprise development in smaller rural communities. In doing this we are setting out to create infrastructure ahead of demand. The project is targeted at people who currently have long commutes to work each day and wish to set up a business and could easily work from home. It would ideally suit micro businesses in the traded services sector, or businesses such as graphic design, consultancy, web design, publishing and professional services. It is also ideal for people who have already set up a business from home but find their current home is no longer suitable for their growing business needs,” said Mr. Brassil.
Taking a holistic approach, Shannon Development recognised the importance of town planning and worked with in conjunction with Kerry Co. Council on a town plan for Tarbert. To help create an enterprise culture in Tarbert, Shannon Development also worked with Tarbert Development Association and the local community to establish a community website and training for voluntary community mentors. Each mentor is available to provide support for business and community interests in Tarbert. This now ensures that the Community can play a real and active part in all technology aspects of the project.
Construction work on Tarbert E-Town will get underway shortly and is expected to take one year to complete. Shannon Development has appointed a design team led by project manager Richard Walsh and Associates who will also provide their services as quantity surveyors. The team will also include; R & L Walsh Construction Ltd; O’Sullivan Campbell Architects; Procad, mechanical and electrical services, and Malachy Walshe & Partners, civil and structural engineers.
