Shannon Development this week announced details of its forthcoming Telecommunications Seminar which takes place on Wednesday 7th November ’07 at the South Court Hotel Limerick. The Seminar will discuss a range of topics including future trends and new developments in the Telecommunications sector.
The half day Seminar is being organised by Shannon Development in association with Shannon Broadband Ltd. Eugene Brennan, executive director, Shannon Development will chair the Seminar which is expected to stimulate debate on future broadband developments and how these will impact on regional economies.
Among key speakers will be Kevin Thompstone, chief executive, Shannon Development who will give a regional perspective on Broadband developments in the Shannon Region. Shannon Broadband Ltd is a public sector consortium led by Shannon Development, in partnership with Limerick City Council, Limerick County Council, Clare County Council, North Tipperary County Council, and Offaly County Council.
In May this year Shannon Broadband Ltd appointed Clarke Quarries Ltd to undertake the laying of fibre optic cable in eight towns which are: Abbeyfeale (approx. 4.1km of cable to be laid) and Newcastle West (approx. 6.2km of cable to be laid) in Co. Limerick; Kilrush (approx. 5.2km cable to be laid) in County Clare, Nenagh (approx.10.8km of cable to be laid), Roscrea (approx. 8.1km of cable to be laid) and Templemore (approx.5.7km of cable to be laid) in Co. Tipperary; Banagher (approx.4.2km of cable to be laid) and Birr (approx. 7.7km of cable to be laid) in Co. Offaly.
The network being installed around the towns is called a ‘Metropolitan Area Network’, or ‘MAN’ for short, built under the e-commerce measure of the National Development Plan and co-financed by the EU from the European Regional fund.
Work on this element, phase two of the project, is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
In phase one of the MAN project 57kms of fibre optic cable was laid around Limerick City. This network is now managed by e|net, the Government appointed Management Services Entity.
“Ensuring fast, cost effective broadband services is key to attracting inward investment and creating more jobs in the future. The presence of this additional cable will make it highly attractive and feasible for licensed operators to offer the latest broadband services to businesses, commercial interests, public services, local communities and domestic users,” said Mr. Thompstone.
To compliment the regional perspective, there will be a Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources presentation on developments at National level.
Market trends in the Telecommunications industry and the role of next generation networks will be discussed by Eoin Gahan, Head of Regulation, Trade & Policy Foresight Dept. Forfás.
Other key speakers will include Pat Kidney, Managing Consultant, Analysys Mason who will talk about the importance of Communications Infrastructure for Regional Economies. Donal Brennan Senior Engineer with Limerick County Council will highlight a novel approach to accessing public infrastructure for Broadband. Mark Coan, Marketing Director with UPC will discuss infrastructure driven competition in the Broadband Marketplace. An open forum has been built into the Seminar to allow delegates debate the issues facing the future of Telecommunications. Terry O’ Niadh, County Manager, North Tipperary County Council will give the concluding remarks.
The Seminar will be of interest to all business people, policy makers and public sector organisations. It will begin at 9.00 am (registration from 8.30am) on Wednesday 7th and conclude at 1.00pm followed by a light lunch.
