Shannon Development Warmly Welcomes Government Approval of Fitzgerald Report on Limerick City Regeneration

Shannon Development today (4 March 2007) welcomed the Government approval of the Fitzgerald Report on the regeneration of socially excluded areas of Limerick City.  Mr Fitzgerald, former Dublin City Manager, was appointed by Government last October to lead an initiative to address social exclusion, crime and disorder issues in Moyross and other parts of Limerick City.  As part of his work in Limerick over the last few months, Shannon Development met with Mr Fitzgerald and briefed him on Shannon Development’s work in the city and wider region.

Kevin Thompstone, Chief Executive, Shannon Development, stated, “We welcome the decision of the Government to approve such a comprehensive package of integrated measures for Limerick City.  Mr Fitzgerald’s Report presents a major opportunity to regenerate and revitalise key parts of the city. Shannon Development has been working on the ground in Limerick City for 30 years, and we strongly believe that properly integrated and well coordinated interventions on the scale recommended by Mr Fitzgerald will make a real difference to the people and communities within the city”.

Mr Eoghan Prendergast, Shannon Development’s recently appointed Regional Development Manager for Limerick City, said, “Shannon Development is strongly committed to the development of Limerick City, and we are willing and ready to play whatever role the Government feels will best serve the implementation of these proposals. As part of the Company’s new role, the Government specifically requested Shannon Development to address the needs of less well developed parts of the Shannon Region, and taken with our role as the economic development agency for the Shannon Region, we see the regeneration of socially excluded areas of Limerick city as a key priority with our partners in the city”.

Mr Thompstone added “On a wider front, Shannon Development believes that this support package will significantly enhance the role of Limerick City as the capital of the Shannon Region. From a regional development perspective, this is also good news, given Limerick’s pivotal regional role in the context of the emphasis given to Regional Development in the recently published National Development Plan”.
