The Shannon Region Tourism Board is calling on the Government to put in place a €53 million support package to sustain Shannon International Airport in an Open Skies environment.
The Board has called for this in a letter sent by Shannon Region Tourism Board to the Taoiseach Mr Bertie Ahern T.D, Martin Cullen, TD, Minister for Transport; John O'Donoghue TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism and Micheál Martin, T.D., Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
In the letter Mr. Michael Houlihan, Chairman Shannon Region Tourism Board demanded the immediate implementation of the recommendations in the Tourism and Economic Development Plan which was submitted to Government last year.
“This plan recommends a package of tourism and economic actions to support the Shannon Region and the western seaboard which are heavily reliant on Shannon Airport in terms of economic prosperity. If the proposed €53 million investment is not injected into supporting the Airport over the next 5 years, then the future prosperity of the entire western seaboard will be compromised,” Mr. Houlihan said.
